THE STUART FAMILY ARCHIVE

John H. Kendig

Recorded life status
deceased

Research update — October 7–8, 2026 (original records reviewed):

John H. Kendig, 23, is an innkeeper in the 1850 Margaret Kendig household. John Kendig receives $45.56 in Margaret’s 1879 distribution.

Evidence qualification: Correlate the distribution’s uninitialed John with the existing son using the prior family petition. Age 23 implies about 1827; the compiled 1826 date is retained separately.

Family connection assessment: Retain existing links; no automatic relationship changes.

Next research: Find his own marriage or death record and distinguish him from his father John.

Maternal index update — October 7, 2026: Chester County’s 1844 minors-file index, page 157, names mother Margaret for Mary, Louisa, John and Jackson Kendig, with decedent John Kendig. This matches the sibling group in the original 1859 estate and supports the maternal relationship to the archive’s Margaret Kendig/Weidner profile. The Weidner maiden name and her own parents still depend on compiled evidence; the underlying 1844 minor file has not yet been inspected. [WEB-20261007-211014-db79fb58]

Named among the seven children of John Kendig in the original 1859 estate petition. The October 31, 1859 adjudication calls John H. Kendig the eldest son; he declined to take the real estate, which was then awarded to his brother Jackson Kendig. He lived in Sadsbury Township in 1859. Keep him distinct from his deceased father John. [WEB-20261007-210012-f14b9e32]

Levering (1897), p.248, entry 1347, reports birth April 9, 1826, marriage to Ann Wiley and death in Philadelphia. These remain compiled leads, not facts established by the inspected estate papers. Margaret (Weidner) is the compiled mother; the county’s 1844 minors index separately names John and Margaret as parents of the sibling group Mary, Louisa, John and Jackson, but the underlying minor file has not yet been inspected.
