The original 1870 Sadsbury census, household 459/461, records John D. Kerlin, 44, carpenter, with $2,000 real and $300 personal estate. Mary A., John H., William H., Margaret and Josephine Pine share the household. The Jr. suffix is not independently proved by this census.

Census ages and reported origins remain source assertions. A household relationship to its head does not automatically establish biological maternity. Earlier qualifications and conflicting evidence remain preserved.

Earlier archive notes (preserved): Research update — October 7–8, 2026 (original records reviewed):
The estate audit identifies John D. Kerlin as Margaret Kendig’s son-in-law. He claimed $327.43 for care and $10 rent; the auditor recognized care but disallowed the claim for want of a payment contract/rent evidence. His daughter Margaret testified. In 1880 John D. Kerlin, 51, is an engineer in a factory, with wife Mary Ann, three listed children and niece Josephine Pine.
Evidence qualification: The inspected census and estate use John D. Kerlin without independently proving the archive’s Jr. suffix. The audit is not necessarily the final outcome after exceptions.
Family connection assessment: Retain existing links; no automatic relationship changes.
Next research: Inspect the final court order and obtain a vital record identifying his own parents.

Prior saved research (preserved verbatim):
The original 1859 petition in John Kendig’s estate identifies Mary Ann Kendig’s husband as John D. Kerlin Jr. and places both in Sadsbury Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. The historical spouse link is explicit. Jr. is a recorded suffix; it does not by itself establish his father’s name. Birth, death and parents remain unknown. [WEB-20261007-210012-f14b9e32]
Levering (1897), p.248, calls Mary’s husband John Kerlin; this is a correlated compiled name form, not an additional person. [700.80.015]
