8 October 2026 - Bloodline and ancestral-household research
Alfred, 12, Illinois-born and attending school, is recorded as Gust’s son in the original 1930 household at 3020 Flournoy Street. The census label does not overturn Luigi Fiore’s biological paternity or prove a legal adoption.
Evidence and limits R3 - Giusto Traina family — original 1930 Chicago census 1930 U.S. census, Chicago Ward 29, Cook County, Illinois; ED 16-993, sheet 1B, April 7, 1930; 3020 Flournoy Street, dwelling 9, family 20, lines 73–78. https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/6224/images/4584261_00593?pid=24884796
Census ages and reported origins remain source assertions. A household relationship to its head does not automatically establish biological maternity. Earlier qualifications and conflicting evidence remain preserved.

Earlier archive notes (preserved): Original baptism register inspected 2 October 2026: Holy Guardian Angel Parish, Baptisms 1916–1918, image 283/302, printed page 281, entry 169, names Alfonso Fiore, born 20 December 1917, baptized 31 March 1918, parents Luigi and Elvira Fastuca (handwritten reading). This corrects the earlier May 31 baptism transcription. A later annotation names Camille Criola and gives their marriage as 21 December 1946 at Our Lady of Sorrows, Chicago. Preserve this alongside the conflicting 1945 family account; the original marriage record has not been inspected. The annotation strengthens identification of the Fiore birth identity with Alfred Traina but does not establish legal adoption or resolve all maternal surname variants. Earlier research and family accounts, retained with the correction above: Alfred Joseph Traina (born Fiore). Paternal great-grandfather of James. family-supplied compilation; original records pending. Birth: 20 Dec 1917. Death: 8 Oct 1977. Biological son of Luigi Fiore and Josephine DeCaro. After Luigi’s reported death about 1919, Josephine married Giusto Traina in 1922; Giusto is identified as Alfred’s stepfather/adoptive father. Alfred married Camille Criola on 21 December 1945 and was buried at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside, Illinois. Also reported as Alfred Joseph Fiore. Spouse or spouses named: Camille_Criola. Adoptive or step-parent named: Giusto_Traina. Parents recorded by project IDs: Luigi_Fiore, Josephine_DeCaro. Source: Aunt Lori family history compilation supplied 20 September 2026; evidence 300.00.001. Lori supplies Luigi Fiore and Josephine DeCaro as biological parents. Giusto is the stepfather; adoption is reported in earlier family testimony, but no adoption record has been inspected. Do not substitute Giusto into the biological parent slots. New research: original 1940 draft card records birth 20 December 1917 in Chicago, mother Josephine Alvira Traina, and employer United Hardware Co. Original 1950 census lists wife Camille and daughter Linda Ann; occupation food salesman, food manufacturing company. NUMIDENT index names Gust Traina and Alvira Fastuca; biological parentage and the DeCaro/Fastuca/Festuca/Fistuca difference remain unresolved. Sources 300.10.001–003. Preserve Lori’s exact 8 October 1977 death claim; the reviewed Social Security index supplies only October 1977. A search-result Find a Grave entry suggested 11 October (this was the day he was buried at Queen of Heaven Cemetery) but its underlying record was not inspected, so it is only a follow-up lead. The Army enlistment index reports 11 April 1941, private, four years of high school, and store floor-man/floor-manager occupation. School name, diploma and service file have not been verified [300.10.004]. Original Queen of Heaven interment card gives burial 11 October 1977, age 59, address 7129 W. Armitage, Chicago, Apostles Shrine, grave 8LL, lot 67, block 13, section 17. The card does not give the death date. This is compatible with Lori’s 8 October death claim but does not independently verify it [300.10.005]. MyHeritage follow-up, 20 September 2026: The BIRLS-derived index names Alfred J. Traina, birth 20 December 1917, service 11 April 1941–25 August 1945, death 8 October 1977. This supports Lori’s death date and aligns with the previously reviewed enlistment date. No unit, deployment, combat or cause of death is established. Code 4 is transcribed without interpretation. [300.10.006] January 1937 application index names Alfred Joseph Traina, born 20 December 1917 in Chicago, (adoptive) father Gust Traina and (birth) mother Alvira Fastuca/Festuca. This repeats the earlier NUMIDENT conflict; it is not an additional independent source for biological parentage. [300.10.007] Lists alias Alfonsino Liugi Fiore, birth 20 December 1917, death 8 October 1977, father Luigi (Rocco) Fiore, mother Josephine Alvira Traina (born DeCaro), wife Camille Michalena Criola, and children Sandra and Jill. Omission of Linda and Lori does not contradict Lori’s four-child family. Treat additional names as leads, not established aliases. [300.10.008] Original marriage evidence [100.90.001]: Original Virginia marriage return inspected on 20 September 2026, image 345 of 504, clerk number 615; indexed certificate 75-013841. Albert Edward Stuart and Sandra Lee Traina married on 27 May 1975 in Alexandria, Virginia. Albert is recorded born 30 January 1941 in Pennsylvania, age 34, with father Harry W. Stuart and mother Margaret Scott. Sandra is recorded born 25 August 1950 in Illinois, age 24, with father Alfred J. Traina and mother Camille Criola. The license was signed 19 May 1975. The form records Albert as divorced, entering his second marriage, and Sandra as single, entering her first marriage. The prior spouse is not named. The certificate supports the recorded parent-child links; it is not a birth certificate or evidence about Alfred’s biological versus adoptive parentage. Penny Sue Traina is indexed as born and died 23 October 1953 in Chicago. The record explicitly names father Alfred Traina and mother Camille Criola, and gives entry number 74806, Mount Carmel burial and the Flournoy Street address previously associated with Alfred. This supports adding Penny as their daughter, with parentage sourced to the death index. The original death certificate remains uninspected; no cause of death is established. The original card names Penny S. Traina, interment 31 October 1953, age 13 hours, number 74806, lot 44, block 6, section 26. Image 5217 of 5627. The matching entry number connects it to the death index. The card does not name parents or state a death date. Its age is more precise than the index’s zero days. CCH and Mon.Spc. are not expanded without evidence. Lori names Linda, Sandra, Jill and Lori; those four remain recorded. Penny is an additional infant daughter documented by the death index and matching cemetery card, not a replacement for any named child. New Fiore record review: Alfonsino Fiore is indexed born 20 December 1917 in Chicago, certificate 46549, with father Luigi Fiore, age 26, birthplace indexed Boneventi, Italy, and mother Elvera Fustuca/Festuca/Fastuca, age 18, Palermo, Italy. The matching date and surname variants support a candidate identification with Alfred Joseph Traina and the previously reported Fustuca/Fastuca/Festuca maternal name. The cross-name identification remains unconfirmed; this does not prove that DeCaro and Fustuca/Festuca/Fastuca are interchangeable or establish legal adoption. [300.10.014] Later Traina and DeCaro record follow-up: The full contributed record names Josephine Alvira Traina born DeCaro, alias Elvera Fustuca, October 16, 1899, mother ? DeCaro (Lasala), husbands Luigi (Rocco) Fiore and Giusto Traina, children Alfred Joseph Traina born Fiore, Jeanette Lucille FitzPatrick, Marie Monasteri and Joseph Traina. The alias matches the name in Alfred’s earlier candidate birth index, but a contributed tree is not proof of that identity and may derive from the same records already reviewed. The mother’s given name is unknown; do not manufacture a person named question mark. The linked California death record supplies a Decaro/LaSalle surname combination, but no original marriage or birth record was inspected to establish the alias. [300.50.006] Fastuca and DeCaro identity evidence: Full NUMIDENT entry: Alfred Josphe Traina, alias Alfred Traina, born 20 December 1917 Chicago; application January 1937; death October 8, 1977. Parent section names Alvira Fastuca/Festuca/Fastuca and Gust Traina. This matches Alfred’s original draft birth date and death month/year and supports Alvira Fastuca as a name used for his mother, already named Josephine Alvira Traina on his original draft card (300.10.001). Gust’s inclusion in the parent section does not establish biological paternity or a legal adoption: Luigi Fiore remains the recorded biological father and Giusto/Gust the stepfather from Aunt Lori’s account. The original application is unavailable. Alfonsino Fiore’s 1917 birth identity remains a separate correlation question. [300.10.032] Original 1950 Chicago census, ED 103-2811, sheet 6, image 7 of 37, inspected at magnification: 3020 Flournoy, household 52, Gust Traina, head, 52, married, Italy, machinist at motor coach manufacturing, 40 hours; Alvira, wife, 50, Italy, restaurant waitress, 35 hours. Household 53 at the same street number: Alfred J Traina, head, 32, Illinois, food salesman; Camille wife 31 Illinois; Linda Ann daughter 2 Illinois. These latter rows were previously abstracted in 300.10.002. Household 54 begins Sam Monasteri, head, 27, Illinois, optician at a glasses manufacturer; next image continues Marie Monasteri, wife, 24, Illinois, receptionist/secretary in a shirt-company sales office. Next page also shows Angeline Criola, head, 67, widowed, Italy, with children James S 48, Nick 47, Charles P 45, Rose P 45, Antoinette 43 and Fred 36, all Illinois. Nearby Charles Stroble 27, wife Ann R 27 and daughter Sharon L 2 are a research lead only: the census does not prove Ann is Anna Criola, nor a connection to the private contributed Stroble profile. No new Stroble relatives are added. Follow-on image: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QHN-GQHW-NJBD . [300.10.036] Army enlistment index for Alfred J Traina, birth year 1917 Illinois, service/enlistment event 11 April 1941 Chicago, serial 36019372, private, single without dependents, four years of high school, civilian occupation floormen and floor managers in stores. The index displays “Enlistment for the Panama Canal Department” and “Selectees (Enlisted Men)”. These are indexed administrative fields, not proof of deployment, combat, unit assignment, or discharge. The name, birth year/state and Chicago context are consistent with Alfred, but service-file correlation is still needed before treating every detail as established. No original image was provided. [300.10.037] Jeanette cemetery evidence and census follow-up: FamilySearch search for Jeanette Traina born 1923–1924 returned Jannette L Traina in the 1940 Chicago census, born about 1924 Illinois, parents indexed Gust Trevino and Alfira Traina, siblings Marie E Traina, Alfred J Traina and Joseph G Traina. The names strongly suggest the target household, but these are search-result fields only. Opening KW1Z-3N7 triggered an Incapsula human-verification screen; neither the complete record nor original census image was inspected. Do not adopt Trevino as a surname, change parentage, or add census occupations/address until the original is reviewed. The James-and-Jeanette Fitzpatrick paired-spouse search did not yield a confidently matched household among the inspected results; this is not proof of absence. Next step after human verification: inspect KW1Z-3N7 and its image. [300.90.002] Original 1940 Traina and Criola households: Original 1940 Chicago census inspected across images 647 and 648 of 779, enumeration district 103-1865, Ward 29, sheets 2B and 3A. On sheet 2B line 80, Gust, age 42, married, born Italy, heads household 48 at 3020 Flournoy; home owned with reported value $2,500. His occupation is mechanic, motor-coach company, with 40 hours reported for the preceding workweek. The handwritten surname is not fully resolved; the index reads Trevino. The continuation, matching address, names and ages identify this as the Traina family; Trevino is not adopted as an established alias. Preceding-page image: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-89MB-LQDN . Sheet 3A lines 1–5 continues with Alfira, wife, 40, Italy; Alfred J, son, 22, Illinois; Jannette L, daughter, 16, Illinois; Marie E, daughter, 14, Illinois; Joseph G, son, 12, Illinois. Alfred is recorded as a mechanic in motor-coach manufacturing, 65 hours in the preceding workweek. Jeanette’s occupation entry reads NYA and the industry appears a sewing project; the industry reading is tentative. All six show the same house in 1935. The census labels Alfred son but does not establish biological parentage or legal adoption; Luigi Fiore remains his biological father in the family documentation. On the same sheet, Angeline Criola, widowed, age 58, born Italy, heads household 51; her listed children are James 38, Nicholas 37, Charles 35, Fred 26, Rose 29, Antonette 28, Marie 22, Carmella (aka Camille) 20 and Anna 18, all born Illinois. These are recorded ages, not verified birth dates. Carmella remains a separately qualified possible identity for Camille; proximity alone does not resolve that identity. This original-image examination supersedes the search-result-only access status in 300.90.002 and strengthens the previously indexed Criola household (300.10.021). No new parent edges or people added. Images viewed, not separately downloaded. [300.10.042]
Lori photograph review, 22 September 2026: Holy Guardian Angel Church, Chicago, Certificate of Birth and Baptism, issued 3 January 1946. Names Alphonsus Fiore, child of Louis and Elvira Fastuca (handwritten surname reading provisional), born 20 December 1917 in Chicago and baptized 31 May 1918. Volume XV, page 281. The date and names correlate with Alfred Joseph Traina’s Fiore birth-index and draft-card evidence. This church extract adds support for 20 December, while Lori’s 21 December account remains preserved. It does not establish Giusto’s biological paternity or a legal adoption. [300.20.012]
Family testimony — Joe Stuart, October 3, 2026: his grandfather Alfred Joseph Traina served in World War II. Branch, unit, rank and exact service dates are not supplied by this testimony and remain to be checked against original military records.
Military verification review — October 3, 2026: Reopened the complete FamilySearch Army enlistment transcription (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K8PZ-V76?lang=en), corroborating existing sources 300.10.004 and 300.10.037 rather than adding an independent duplicate. Alfred J Traina is indexed enlisted April 11, 1941 in Chicago, private (PVT), Army selectee, born 1917 Illinois, four years of high school, civilian occupation store floor-man/floor-manager. Name, birth year/state and Chicago context agree with Alfred; the original October 16, 1940 draft image was also re-inspected and gives December 20, 1917, Chicago, mother Josephine Alvira Traina and United Hardware Co. Together with previously preserved veterans-benefits index 300.10.006 (April 11, 1941–August 25, 1945, matching full birth/death dates), this provides documentary corroboration of Army service during WWII beyond family testimony. Discharge date remains supported by that saved benefits index, whose live MyHeritage record now requires a subscription and was not re-read. No original personnel file has been inspected. The enlistment term field says Panama Canal Department, but that administrative code is NOT proof of actual Panama deployment. Unit, theater, combat, final rank and decorations remain unconfirmed.
