Irish-origin research, September 23, 2026: Research checked September 23, 2026. Candidate only for Alexander Stewart/Stuart (archive ID alexander_stuart); identity not proven. Delaware County Clerk’s Office naturalization abstract, electronic text prepared by Cheryl Jordan June 5, 1997, lists Alexander Stewart, age 30, sworn December 24, 1855, DATE 1844, FROM Dundalk, BIRTHPLACE Ireland, RESIDENCE Davenport, accession .11020. The matching Davenport residence and approximate age make this worth investigating. Dundalk is in the FROM column, not an established birthplace; no Irish county or parents are proven. Original application, signature and witnesses have not been inspected. Other local Alexander entries include Steward, Kortright, January 29, 1855, accession .1960; do not conflate them. Next: inspect the original December 24, 1855 document using accession .11020, compare witnesses/residence/signature, then search Irish church registers under Stuart, Stewart and Steward. Irish civil birth registration begins in 1864, too late for the preferred 1823 birth. No confidently matched Irish baptism found in this search. Joe’s census-misspelling explanation remains a hypothesis; no formal surname change established. Source: [WEB-20260923-195350-2e8c8408].
Earlier research notes (retained): Alexander Stewart New 1894 deed and passport evidence Probable 3rd great-grandfather of James Parentage uncertain; subjective estimate 75% Birth: 1823, Ireland (preferred FamilySearch tree value) FamilySearch GCVN-2X8; Stuart in Diven. Discrepancy: 1875 census indexes age 65, implying about 1809–1810. Tree year about 1823 is retained by user instruction. Parents and death remain unknown; the age conflict does not prevent following further leads. Birthplace discrepancy: tree says Ireland; prior reading of 1875 manuscript says Scotland. Ireland retained per research policy. No parents are attached in the inspected tree. The 1855 index gives age 35 (about 1820). Margaret’s widowed status in 1900 suggests his death before that census if household attribution is correct; this is an inference, not a verified death date. Ireland is also explicitly recorded in the original 1855 census and son Henry’s original 1913 marriage affidavit. The 1880 index reports both parents born Ireland, without names. Original 1892 census supports Scotland and citizenship. If all household identifications are correct, the 1892 enumeration and Margaret’s widowhood in 1900 narrow his death search to 1892–1900; this is an inference, not a recorded death date. 1875 · Census household Franklin, Delaware County, New York. Household 155, page 17: Alexander, Margret, Marry J, Joseph and Albert Stewart; Daniel Northrup also enumerated. Albert age 8, son. Alexander Stewart: a promising 1894 death-index lead. The original New York State death index for 1894 lists Stuart, Alexander, 19 Apr, Franklin, number 16918 (printed page 775; scan n787). The original image was inspected, rather than relying on OCR, which misreads the surname. This verifies the index entry, not yet the identity of the family’s Alexander Stewart. The date fits the established search interval after the identified 1892 census and by the 6 September 1894 heirs deed. The surname variant and place-name Franklin also fit. However, this index does not state a county, age, spouse, parents, burial place or cause of death. The project ancestor lived in Franklin, Delaware County, New York; the index alone does not establish that its Franklin is the same locality. Identity remains unconfirmed and the preferred death field remains blank. The next target is the underlying 1894 death certificate numbered 16918, plus a corroborating obituary or estate record linking the deceased to this family. No certificate was ordered and nobody was contacted. Earlier 1892 Argyle and Irvington namesakes remain unconfirmed, now lower-priority leads. Original 1894 Stewart and Steward blocks on printed pages 767–768 (scans n779–780) were also checked; no Alexander appears in those inspected blocks. This limited negative search does not prove complete registration or exclude other variants. New York State Death Index, 1894, printed p. 775, Alexander Stuart entry; Reclaim The Records / Internet Archive, original scan n787. Evidence 100.10.015; companion scans 100.10.015.1–015.2. Inspected 20 September 2026. https://archive.org/details/New_York_State_Death_Index_1894/page/n787/mode/1up Original 1870 census review: Original 1870 federal census image 347 of 557, page 44, household 382, Franklin, Delaware County, New York, lists Alexander Stewart, 47, farmer, born Ireland; Margarett, 45, keeping house, born New York; Mary J., 15; Joseph H., 9; and George H., 3, the latter three born New York. Rufus McClurson (indexed spelling), 12, born New York, also appears in the household. The 1870 schedule does not specify family relationships; residence together alone does not establish Rufus’s parentage. Alexander’s real estate and personal estate appear as $4,500 and $2,400. The header identifies Delaware County, whereas an image-side index field says Franklin, Otsego; preserve the original county and flag the index discrepancy. The ages support approximate births of 1822–1823 for Alexander and 1824–1825 for Margaret; preferred tree years 1823 and 1825 remain unchanged. George H. in 1870, George A. in the 1880 index, and Albert E. in later records must not be treated as proven equivalents from this census alone. This original inspection replaces the earlier note that the 1870 record was only an uninspected tree-source lead. Index: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M8FK-WKH. [100.10.016] 1850, 1860 and 1880 original census review: Original 1880 census image 92 of 721, page 23, stamped 164, ED 69, Franklin, Delaware County, New York, dwelling 440/family 510, lines 5–9: Alexander Stewart, 56, farmer, born Ireland, both parents Ireland; Margerett, 45, wife, keeping house, born New York, both parents New York; Mary Jane, 22, daughter, at home; Joseph H., 19, son, at home; George A., 13, son, attending school. All three children are shown born New York. The handwritten parent-birthplace columns for the children also appear to say New York/New York, conflicting with Alexander’s Ireland entry; retain the discrepancy rather than infer another father. The original confirms the explicit wife, daughter and son labels relative to the head, but does not independently establish the children’s biological mother. George A. is clearly written; identification with the later Albert Emerson Stuart remains unconfirmed. Margaret’s age 45 conflicts with her age 45 in 1870 and with other records. Preferred tree birth years remain Alexander 1823 and Margaret 1825. This inspection supersedes the earlier C1880 status of index-only/original uninspected. Index: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MZZK-F49. [100.10.017] Original 1860 census, image 342 of 604, page 37, Davenport, Delaware County, New York, enumerated 8 August 1860, first five lines: Alexander Stewart, 35, farmer, born Ireland; Margaret, 32, born New York; Mary J., 5; Emily A., 1; and Harmon Hitt, 12. The latter three birthplaces are dittoed New York. The original confirms the indexed name Emily A. and her age 1. Neither Emily’s later fate nor Harmon’s relationship is established by this household entry. The 1860 schedule has no relationship-to-head column, so it must not be used alone to establish biological parentage or marriage. These ages conflict with other enumerations; preferred tree birth years remain unchanged. This original inspection supersedes C1860’s former index-only status. Index: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MC74-XJH. [100.10.018] Original 1850 census image 317 of 610, Maryland, Otsego County, New York, household 332, lists Alexander Stewart, 25, farmer, born Ireland; Margaret Stewart, 24, born New York; and Wm Wright, 5, born Ireland. The original has marks in the Married within the year column for both Alexander and Margaret. This supports a marriage within the census reporting year, but is not an exact marriage date or a marriage certificate and does not establish Margaret’s maiden surname. William Wright’s relationship is not stated; he must not be classified as their biological child or Margaret’s child from an earlier marriage on this evidence alone. Household 332 is clear; the adjacent dwelling field is blank on the inspected rows, so the index’s dwelling 320 should remain index-attributed. The original confirms the indexed ages and birthplaces while leaving discrepancies with later censuses unresolved. This inspection supersedes C1850’s former index-only status.
